PicSpeak is an open-source, bilingual digital flashcard platform for toddlers learning English and Traditional Chinese. PicSpeak 是一個開源的雙語數位字卡平台，陪伴幼兒同時學習英文和繁體中文。

Why we made it我們的初衷

In July 2024, I made a set of bilingual paper flashcards for a friend's two-year-old son. The goal was simple: help Taiwanese immigrant families teach their children both English and Traditional Chinese, without needing time or resources to visit lots of different places. 2024 年 7 月，我為朋友兩歲的兒子做了一套雙語紙本字卡。初衷很單純：幫助台灣移民家庭，在不需要花費大量時間與資源四處走訪的情況下，讓孩子同時學習英文和繁體中文。

One parent's feedback was simple: “It would be better if it could play sound.” That little spark became PicSpeak — a digital, interactive version with native-speaker audio, multiple real-life photos per word, and rich bilingual captions, so any family can learn together. 一位家長的回饋很簡單：「如果能發出聲音就更好了。」這個小小的火花，成了 PicSpeak —— 一個加入母語發音、每個字卡多張真實照片、以及豐富雙語說明的互動數位版本，讓每個家庭都能一起學習。

What makes a card字卡的設計

Each word shows several real photographs in different contexts — a dishwasher in a kitchen, being installed, left on the roadside — so a child learns to recognise the same concept across people, places, and appearances. Every photo carries a short, toddler-friendly caption in both languages. 每個字都用多張不同情境的真實照片呈現 —— 廚房裡的洗碗機、正在安裝的、被放在路邊的 —— 讓孩子學會在不同的人、地點與外觀中，認出同一個概念。每張照片都附上簡短、適合幼兒的雙語說明。
